StormMaster lines require heavier 30-pound synthetic underlayment minimum per Atlas spec, while ProLam can use standard 15-pound felt, though we don’t install felt anymore on any job, Chicago winters being what they are.

Signs Your Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on the ceiling that grow after every rain. This usually means the underlayment has torn at a valley or penetration, and water is traveling along the deck before finding a seam. On Atlas roofs installed before 2010, we often find the original felt has become brittle and cracked where it folds into the valley.
• Soft or bouncy spots when you walk the roof. That’s compromised decking beneath the shingles, typically OSB that has absorbed moisture through a fastener hole or torn underlayment. In Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles, wet OSB delaminates fast. We replace with exterior-grade CDX plywood, never OSB on a repair.
• Shingle tabs lifting or blowing off in clusters. When underlayment fails underneath, the decking swells and warps, which loosens the nail grip on Atlas shingles. The shingles themselves may be fine, but they’re sitting on a moving surface.
• Granules collecting in valleys or downspout outlets. Excessive granule loss on an Atlas Pinnacle or StormMaster often traces back to trapped moisture against the underside of the shingle, caused by saturated underlayment that can’t breathe or drain.
• Musty attic smell after warm rains. Failed underlayment lets humidity into the attic space even when no active leak reaches the ceiling. We see this in Chicago’s May and September storm patterns, when warm, wet air hits the underside of a compromised deck.

DIY or Call Us?
