How Ridgeline Roofing Co. of Chicago Was Born in Chicago
It was a Tuesday morning in March of 1984, and we were standing in the driveway of a brick bungalow in Brighton Park, watching a homeowner argue with a roofer who’d already packed his ladder. The job was half-finished. Three-tab shingles flapped loose along the garage edge, and the man had just presented a bill that was forty percent higher than his verbal estimate. The homeowner, a retired machinist, kept saying, “You told me Tuesday, you told me the price.” The roofer kept pointing at water stains he’d “discovered” in the attic, stains that weren’t there when he’d quoted the job.
We were working for another outfit then, learning the trade, and we’d seen this script before. The industry in Chicago back then was thick with it: the bait-and-switch, the storm-chaser who’d be in Missouri by the weekend, the crew that showed up with a borrowed truck and no paperwork. That morning, we made a promise to ourselves. If we ever ran our own operation, we’d do the opposite of everything we’d just witnessed. We’d give a written estimate and stick to it. We’d show the homeowner photos from their own roof, not scare them with a ladder leaned against their gutter. We’d still be in Chicago when the shingles weathered to gray.
That spring, Ridgeline Roofing Co. opened its Chicago branch. The name came from the ridge, the line where a roof proves itself. We chose it because that’s where we do our best looking: at the peak, where workmanship shows or fails.
Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the Roofing Trade
We didn’t fall into roofing. We climbed into it.
The first time we went up, we were nineteen years old, working summers for a tradesman who trained us on jobs across the South Side. He sent us up to tear off three layers of cedar shake from a Victorian in Douglas, and we remember everything about that August afternoon: the smell of ninety-year-old pitch dust, the way the cedar crumbled like stale bread in our hands, the heat coming off the black tar paper like a skillet. Our knees burned through our jeans. Our forearms itched from the fiberglass insulation. We were miserable. We were also completely absorbed.
By the second week, we started seeing differently. A sag in the decking meant something specific. The pattern of nail pops told a story about the winter before. We learned to read a roof the way a farmer reads a field, and we found we couldn’t stop looking. Driving through Bridgeport or Grand Boulevard, we’d find ourselves staring up at ridgelines, noting the drip edge, guessing the age of the install. Still do it today. Forty-two years of this, and every roof still teaches us something.
What gets us out of bed isn’t the pride of a finished job, though there’s that. It’s the homeowner who meets us at the door with coffee, who’s been worrying about a brown spot on the bedroom ceiling for three months, who’s been putting off the call because they don’t trust who might show up. We get to be the person who climbs up, takes the photos, shows them exactly what’s happening, and gives them a number that doesn’t change. That conversation, the relief in their shoulders when they realize we’re not selling them anything they don’t need, that’s the whole reason.
If we weren’t doing this, we’d probably be fixing something else. Old boats, maybe. There’s a similar satisfaction in making something watertight that wasn’t. But Chicago’s winters and lake-effect wind have kept us busy enough that we haven’t had to find out.

Our training started with old-school tear-offs and built up through every major system that’s come since: asphalt architectural shingles, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield, proper ventilation design. We’ve worked with CertainTeed and Owens Corning materials long enough to know which lines hold up to Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles and which don’t. We’ve seen what IKO’s Cambridge line does on a south-facing pitch after fifteen summers. We don’t spec anything we wouldn’t put on our own mother’s house, which is more than a saying for us. We’re open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM. A live coordinator answers during those hours and connects you with our local team. We’re not going anywhere. Chicago’s our ridge, and we intend to prove ourselves on it for another forty years.
